How did New Zealand hear about MOPS?

In the spring of 1990, Jo Sadlier heard about MOPS on Radio Rhema. Chelsea Russell, then president of MOPS International, was being interviewed by Dr James Dobson on the programme ‘Focus On The Family’.

Jo approached her minister, Rev. Don Corban of Holy Trinity Anglican church, Forest Lake Hamilton with the concept. He encouraged Jo to speak to Laurel Smith who was running a group for mothers of preschoolers at the church. Both agreed MOPS was needed and approached vestry. Vestry gave approval and MOPS Holy Trinity sought charter to MOPS International.

February 1991 - MOPS Holy Trinity started in Hamilton.

Negotiations began with MOPS International to make the MOPS concept more available and culturally relevant to NZ.

Jo and Laurel were given permission by MI to rewrite the MOPS manual. Negotiations to become the first Affiliated country to MOPS International continued.

Manual written for guidelines on setting up MOPS structure. MOPS NZ is required to become an Incorporated Society.

Rules for incorporation drawn up with the assistance of Leslie McGregor. Application lodged and accepted.

1997 MOPS (NZ) Inc became affiliated.
